The High Speed Rail Group is pleased to welcome Balfour Beatty as it’s newest member, further strengthening the organisation’s expertise in infrastructure delivery and engineering.
A leading international infrastructure provider, Balfour Beatty brings extensive experience from complex, large-scale projects across the rail and construction sectors. Its membership enhances HSRG’s ability to represent the full breadth of the high-speed rail supply chain, supporting the Group’s mission to ensure new rail infrastructure is efficient, well-integrated, and delivers long-term benefits for passengers, freight, and the communities it serves.
Balfour Beatty is currently playing a major role in delivering the UK’s new high-speed railway through its joint venture with VINCI. Working on behalf of HS2 Ltd, the company is responsible for designing and constructing 90km of main works in the West Midlands, between Long Itchington in Warwickshire and Birmingham. The joint venture is also leading the final design and construction of Old Oak Common station in west London – a key future interchange on Britain’s high-speed rail network.
This direct involvement in the delivery of high-profile, technically complex infrastructure provides valuable insight into the practical challenges and opportunities of delivering high-speed rail at scale, which Balfour Beatty will bring to the work of HSRG.
Richard Watts, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty’s Rail business, said:
“We’re pleased to be joining the High Speed Rail Group, working alongside organisations with a shared focus on the future of high-speed rail in the UK. Drawing on our experience delivering complex rail infrastructure, we look forward to contributing practical insight that supports the development of efficient, well-integrated new lines.
Investment in rail plays an important role in improving connectivity, and we’re keen to play our part in helping ensure these schemes deliver lasting value for passengers and communities.”
Huw Merriman, Chair of the High Speed Rail Group, said:
“Balfour Beatty’s involvement at both Birmingham and Old Oak Common gives them a unique understanding of the scale of high-speed rail projects and what is needed to make them work effectively.
Their expertise will be invaluable as the industry tackles the practical challenges of delivering new lines, from better integrating new rail infrastructure into the existing network to ensuring communities and passengers fully benefit from the opportunities high-speed rail can deliver.”
