We spoke to Daniel Komolafe, Supply Chain Apprentice with Strabag Costain Skanska joint venture

Can you describe your role in a few words?

I help buyers with business assurance and the on-boarding of the suppliers they want to use on the project.

What were you doing prior to your Apprenticeship?

I had recently dropped out of university and was working with an agency doing short term warehouse roles. Did you want to say why you dropped out of university, perhaps why an apprenticeship was preferred?

What was your perception of the sector before you started your apprenticeship?

My perception of the industry was that the roles available were roles like on site construction and maybe accountants, but I’d never really heard of or considered how important procurement is in the construction sector.

What interested you in joining AECOM?

What made you apply to AECOM? My first interview when my manager told me about the Procurement and supply chain departments and their role in the company. I was applying to different apprenticeships that interested me and they seemed to have good ones.

What are the key things you’ve learnt so far in your job?

I have learnt how important networking and communications is on projects, having a good working relationship with people in your department is vital.

What is the most exciting part of your role?

I really enjoy getting to engage with suppliers and create our supplier forms.

Have you worked on the HS2 project through your apprenticeship?

Yes, I have worked on HS2 with the Strabag Costain Skanska joint venture throughout.

What would you like to do after completing your apprenticeship?

I am not sure yet. I might want to be an assistant supply chain manager or I might want to be a buyer or join the commercial team. I will know when I have learnt more about the roles in Procurement.
