We spoke to Engineering Rail Technician Stefan Mirkovic

Can you describe your role in a few words?

I am an Engineering Rail Technician L3 Apprentice with Alstom.

What were you doing prior to your Apprenticeship?

I was at school finishing my GCSEs.

What was your perception of the sector before you started your apprenticeship?

I thought it would be a sector that required a lot of hard work, and also that it might not be particularly easy for a young person to get established in.

What interested you in joining Alstom?

I had an interest in Alstom as a company with a good reputation, and I also had an interest in electric and mechanical tasks, such as helping to fix my dad’s car and building my computer.

What are the key things you’ve learnt so far in your job?

  • To always wear PPE.
  • Put your head down, and work well.
  • There will always be more opportunities in the future.
  • Work is fun when you have a passion for it.

What is the most exciting part of your role?

Getting to predict and diagnose issues on trains and then solve them.

What would you like to do after completing your apprenticeship?

Continue working at Alstom as a technician, then possibly work up into management.
