We spoke to Saffiah Danso, a Human Resources Apprentice with EGCUK, who has recently joined our High Speed Rail Apprentice Network.

Can you describe your role in a few words?

I assist in the delivery of multiple HR functions such as aiding the onboarding process, drafting and sending offers/contracts, handling probation reviews and much more on a daily basis.

What were you doing prior to your Apprenticeship?

Prior to my apprenticeship I had been working in the childcare industry for three years, in nurseries and holiday/activity centres.

What was your perception of the sector before you started your apprenticeship?

I was not very knowledgeable about this sector prior to starting my apprenticeship and was not overly confident in what kind of functions they deliver.

What interested you in joining EGCUK?

I was interested in joining EGCUK as they are a large international company playing a leading role in such a large and complex project as HS2, as a partner in the EKFB Joint Venture.

What are the key things you’ve learnt so far in your job?

Some of the key things I have learned so far include how to manage my time most effectively, ensuring that I am always ahead with my coursework as well as fulfilling my job role consistently. With regards to general HR I have learnt a huge amount, including  performing background checks, onboarding, construction competencies and much more.

What is the most exciting part of your role?

The most exciting part of my role is being able to have the ability to have a clear view on multiple parts within our business, learning about functions and how/why these are done as well as meeting/speaking with a variety of people every day, who all fulfil varying roles around the project.

Have you worked on the HS2 project through your apprenticeship?

Yes, I have.

What would you like to do after completing your apprenticeship?

I am excited to see what opportunities open up once I gain my qualification and have further developed my practical experience. I am excited and looking forward to my future in HR.
